Who Hates Their Job the Most?

By Cathryn Conroy, CompuServe News Editor

Maybe it's you! More than half of all American workers are growing disgruntled with their jobs. We're fed up--with bonus plans, promotion policies, and even our colleagues. Sounds like we all need a long trip to the beach.

In 1995, nearly 61 percent of us were happy with our work, but seven years later that number is down to a depressing 47.4 percent. CNN reports that job dissatisfaction is widespread demographically, spanning across all ages, incomes, and geographic regions.

There is one aspect of our jobs we like: Not being there. Ouch.

If anything can help us be happy in our work, it's money. Yes, money is a motivator. The Conference Board, which conducted the survey, reports that the more we make, the more we like our jobs. Those earning less than $15,000 a year are the least satisfied of all groups, while those earning more than $50,000 a year are the happiest.

Geographically, folks in the Rocky Mountains are happiest in their jobs with their 57 percent satisfaction rate, while workers in New England are the gloomiest with only 44 percent satisfied.
