In helping the victim the helper, whether s/he is a friend, family, or professional needs a basic knowledge to help the victim to understand that they are not to blame. No one asks to be raped, therefore the fault falls on the sex offender.

Myths

• In movie roles the rapist in the big, dark, scary looking person. The truth is that the rapist is usually very average looking.
• Another misconception is that the rapist is a drunken bum. It is true that 79% of all rapes in 1991 in AK were committed by persons who were under the influence of alcohol or drugs, but that leaves 21% that were not under the influence on either.
• Rapist are thought to be low-wage earners and uneducated people. This is false. Rapist have come from all economic strata , all professions, and all races.
• Generally, most rapists:

• are over 21 are selfish are involved in other crimes such as drugs, assaults, and theft

  assault persons of their own race don't have good social skills are not very responsible have been abused as children

• Although the average rapist has been abuse as a child, a rapist has not got to be an abuse child to become a rapist and not all abuse children become rapists. Therefore child abuse does not cause future rapists. Raping is just a sick side-effect of some adults who were abused as children.
• Rapists are strangers. This is not so. Many rapes are date rapes or done by people the victim knows.

  The FBI Classify Rapists into Four Groups

• 44% of all rapists view people as prey-objects the pick on people that appear vulnerable. This rape is to gain power and control and to assert sexuality. They use trickery manipulation, head games, intimidation, verbal abuse, and isolation to gain access to their prey. For these rapist, the rape is about POWER ASSERTIVENESS.

• 30% of all rapists are raping out of retaliation against real or imagined pain against men, women, or both. This rape is to gain power and control and to reassure their own sexuality. They use Extreme physical force, bruises, cuts, broken bones to gain power over their victims. Their rape act is about ANGER RETALIATION.

• 21% of all rapists are acting out a fantasy. These rapes are about POWER REASSURANCE.

  1-     They either want to find someone who will love what they have to offer, or

  2-     They want to get revenge for real or imagined suffering caused by the victim or the victim's gender. They gain access to their victims through intimidation, verbal abuse, and manipulation.

  The first type often cannot get a girl by normal techniques, but still want to feel reassured that they are sexually valued.  They think that the rape is really wanted by the woman, because they feel they are so good at what they do. This type of rape is called Power Reassurance, because they are testing their sexual power and seeking reassurance of it.  Hence, the name for this rape is Power Reassurance.

  The second type are men who feel they have lost power to the victim or to someone of the same gender, often their mothers.  They use rape to restore their power through domination and making the victim feel powerless.  In dong so they are reassured of their power.  Thus this type of rape is called Power Reassurance. 

   

• .5% of all rapists use love to see others hurt. This rape is to gain excitement from watching victims suffer. the rapist is extremely violent and death of the victim may result. For this type of rapist the act of rape is ANGER EXCITORY.

• RAPE IS NOT ABOUT THE ACT OF LOVE, BUT OF CONTROL, ANGER, AND POWER!
