Dear Annette,

My adult son committed suicide after years of deep depression. He was a return missionary, married in the temple but it ended in divorce because if his mental illness. I hurt that he committed suicide, but I hurt worse from not knowing what will become of my son. He was a good man and I can't bear to think that just because he took his own life that he will be going to the Telestial Kingdom or that he is in Spirit Prison. He will not survive being with those type of people.

I'm afraid to ask the Lord about my son for fear of what He might tell me and at the same time I am gathering information to make a good decision so I can take it to the Lord and ask if I am right. I guess what I am saying is, do you know of any evidence that those who commit suicide will not go to the Telestial Kingdom?

As your counselor I have the right to revelation for your behalf. The whereabouts of your son has bothered me greatly. Being a counselor and dealing with many mentally ill individuals it has bothered me for a long time just how much they will be held accountable for. I know that God's judgments on our lives are done so individually. We also know that God's judgments are not only just, but are tempered with mercy.

The Lord reminded me that we have been taught that those individuals who are mentally impaired like individuals with Down's Syndrome, have a free ride home to Heavenly Father because they haven't reached an age of accountability. Then he told me that there are those individuals like your son who become mentally impaired and lost their capacity to make rationally judgments and also their accountability because of the chemical imbalance in the brain. I now know that those individuals will be judged solely on the part of their life that they were capable of making rational choices between right and wrong.

Your son is with God because he was a helpful sweet individual who knew the gospel and practiced it precepts because of goodly parents that taught him right from wrong. Thank God for you. It is your teachings that have made all the difference in his life here and his eternal life.

You needn't worry that he didn't have an eternal mate as he will have the opportunity to gain one. He kept the commandments to take out his endowments. He took an eternal mate and lost her due to his mental illness. He will not be held accountable for this. Nor will he be held accountable for not taking another eternal mate as he was not capable of doing so at the end of his earthly life.

Be happy and rejoice because you will see your son again. The Lord's promise to you has been fulfilled. You raised your son up the way that he should go, when he was young, and when he was old he did not depart from those teachings. He was still a sweet son of God and love by Him very much.

I tell you these things as the Spirit dictates them for your edification and peace.

Now, take my testimony to the Lord and ask if it is true. Then you will have your answer.

May the Lord be with you!

Best wishes,

Annette Nay, MS
