THE SECOND COMFORTER

Evidence of the Second Comforter, which is promised to all who try to keep the commandments.

Needed: A Book of Mormon, a Bible, and the Doctrine & Covenants.

Read Ether, chapter 3.

Now reread verses 19 and 20. The brother of Jared has just had an awesome experience. In the previous chapter you will see that he has done a lot of praying. This is one of the things that has brought him to this point in his life. There comes a point in one's life when faith no longer exists, and the veil is parted due to pure knowledge.

Turn to John I4: 15- 16.

John tells us that if we keep His commandments - He will "give us another comforter," not just the spirit, and He will abide with us forever.

Go on to verse 17.

Who is it talking about? Here is a hint... "But ye shall know Him: for He dwelleth with you." It is Jesus Christ. He said He would come and be "in" them. The world will not receive it since they are wicked (see verse 15).

Now read verse 18- 19.

What does He mean by ye shall live also? Have you ever beard the phrase "Having your calling and election made sure?" It is the same thing as the Second Comforter. As a person becomes righteous and tries to perfect his life, he receives the Second Comforter, and if he keeps on track, he will inherit the Celestial Kingdom, and will in essence, "live also".

On to verse 20-21.

There you have it, the Second Comforter.

Now read 22-23 and Doctrine & Covenants 130: 3.

Again this shows the Godhead will actually visit and administer to those who are worthy.

Try Doctrine & Covenants 67: 10- 14.

When we are more perfected and worthy of the presence of the Lord.

Check out 2 Peter 1 - 11.

This is the prophet, Peter, in a letter to the whole church. Notice in verse 8, it talks of knowledge, not faith any longer. Also in 10 & 11, it talks of an entrance into an "everlasting" or Celestial Kingdom. When you have this experience, you are basically on the right track. If you keep it up, you will definitely "inherit all that your Father has."

See 2 Nephi 31:20.

See Mormon Doctrine by Bruce R. McConkie

"After a man so devotes himself to righteousness that his calling and election is made sure, "then it will be his privilege to receive the other Comforter," the Prophet says. "Now what is this other Comforter? It is no more or less than the Lord Jesus Christ Himself; and this is the sum and the substance of the whole matter; that when any man obtains this last Comforter, he will have the personage of Jesus Christ to attend him, or appear unto him from time to time, and even He will manifest the Father unto him, and they will take up their abode with him, and the visions of the heavens will be opened unto him, and the Lord will teach him face to face, and he may have a perfect knowledge of God . . ."
