Who Hates Their Job the Most?

By Cathryn Conroy, CompuServe News Editor

Maybe it's you! More than half of all American workers are growing disgruntled with their jobs. We're fed up--with bonus plans, promotion policies, and even our colleagues. Sounds like we all need a long trip to the beach.

In 1995, nearly 61 percent of us were happy with our work, but seven years later that number is down to a depressing 47.4 percent. CNN reports that job dissatisfaction is widespread demographically, spanning across all ages, incomes, and geographic regions.

There is one aspect of our jobs we like: Not being there. Ouch.

If anything can help us be happy in our work, it's money. Yes, money is a motivator. The Conference Board, which conducted the survey, reports that the more we make, the more we like our jobs. Those earning less than $15,000 a year are the least satisfied of all groups, while those earning more than $50,000 a year are the happiest.

Geographically, folks in the Rocky Mountains are happiest in their jobs with their 57 percent satisfaction rate, while workers in New England are the gloomiest with only 44 percent satisfied.

Executive Compensation

by Blaine Nay © 17 Jun 99

According to Forbes magazine, the 100 highest paid corporate officers were paid an average of $22 million each in 1998.

During the same year, the average annual per capita disposable income in the US was approximately $22,000.

I want to know what it is about a corporate executive's job that entitles him to take home 1,000 times as much income as his subordinates!

It's even more frustrating to know that high executive income often includes bonuses based on cutting costs. These costs are often based on cutting jobs or pay and benefits of subordinates!

It's time for some kind of control on runaway executive compensation and perks.

I suggest immediate legislation mandating that no executive receive more total compensation than 100 times the total per capita compensation of the bottom one-third of his employees unless approved by a majority of the same bottom one-third of his employees. Additionally, no executive should receive any compensation whatsoever as long as any former employee is unemployed due to "downsizing."
